AXINE M
Axine M is a vessel for musical inquiries and creative impulses across multiple genres and sentiments, carving out a space for itself against the grain of the dystopian imaginary. A recent self-released tape, USUSUSESESERERER (pronounced "user"), is a songwriterly exploration of interpersonal relationships under late-capitalism. Axine has published tapes with Summer Isle and Embalming Lately, a label she co-founded. As a DJ, Axine has mixed for c-, BIZAARBAZAAR, DUST, Hong Kong Community Radio, and The Lot Radio, among others. Maxine holds a master's degree in Music Technology from NYU Steinhardt.
BRIDGET FERRIL & ÁSLAUG MAGNÚSDOTTÍR
The release of the duo’s collaborative album Woodwind Quintet (Subtext, 2022) showcased their exploration of the complexity of composition by fracturing, deconstructing and interweaving classical elements in intimate and unexpected arrangements. The Berlin-based Ferrill is a composer, engineer, and synthesizer builder. By venturing into the realm of extended instruments, handmade electronics and experimental computer music, she explores the interface between noise and composition. Copenhagen’s Áslaug Magnúsdóttir approaches instruments as a sculptor, pushing the boundaries of conventional music while also engaging in music programming, constructing interactive systems characterized by noise-based behaviors.
About SAMMA
Housed within a building dating back to the early 1900s, the space originated as a pub, and over the years, it underwent transformations, serving as a printshop in the 1960s before standing empty for several years. The recent renovation of SAMMA spanned eight months, and the space has been transformed. Featuring a 40sqm dance floor, a cozy hangout area, a baby grand piano for live performances, and a full kitchen. The preservation of historic elements such as the iron round staircase and old interior windows adds to the charm, where exposed brick meets modern furnishings in a seamless blend of old-world and contemporary aesthetics.
Located at Hofkamp 185, the space enjoys a prime position directly opposite the Schwebebahn station "Landgericht," a landmark of the same era. The River Wupper flows also in front of SAMMA. Situated in the Valley of Wuppertal, the space neighbors the Landgericht (district court) adding to its significance within the region.
The word SAMMA, derived from the German phrase "Sag Mal" (Tell me), encapsulates the essence of contradiction inherent in the local Bergisches Platt dialect of Wuppertal. In this unique linguistic tradition, words are often combined and shortened at the beginning of sentences, allowing for quicker communication. Additionally, the name holds a personal touch, nodding to the nickname "Sam".
